Watch “The Human Planet”

It’s rare that I would suggest a television series is “poetic,” but the BBC series called “The Human Planet” fits that description. We got the first DVD from Netflix last week, and were blown away. The series focuses on the ways humans have learned to live in extreme situations in some of the most unbelievable places.  Disk one had three hour-long episodes: oceans, desert and arctic. As you’d guess, each episode was centered on the place living in one of those areas. While the desert one was not too exciting to me, the other two chapters were visually stunning and made me incredibly grateful to live where I do. A few highlights from the arctic episode include a narwhal hunt (I wasn’t sure they were real!), catching auks, and fishing a whale shark from below a thick layer of ice. Truly worth the watch!  Can’t wait to get disk two.
