Broaden your vocab & help save the words!

I got my first issue of Poets & Writers today, after many years without a subscription, I decided it was time to give it another try. I like having the actual magazine around the house, like an albatross. I immediately learned something new that I wanted to share with all of you…

Did you know that, according to the publishers of the Oxford dictionaries, 90% of everything written today is communicated using only 7,000 words?  Based on their count, that’s only 4% of the approximately 171,476 words that have full entries in their lexicon (not counting 47k+ words deemed obsolete).  To the slow this trend, the good folks at OED set-up savethewords.org, a really cool site that allows you to browse unusual words, sign up for a word of the day (which I just did) and even adopt a word (pledging to use it and spread it around often).

Go check this out now, you’ll be glad you did!
